face-biting fun

sometimes I wonder if I am a sociopath. I get about halfway through these little checklists before I stop. Sometimes I stop because I'm scaring myself, most of the time I stop because my shallow emotions and need for stimulation pushes me to play video games instead. I've been meaning to finish at least one, but my lack of remorse, guilt or shame gives me a nice way to avoid anything that might impinge on my grandiose sense of self. Beyond that, questionnaires are useless to me since I am a pathological liar. Go Me!

Let the money roll in.

Here's my idea. I've been kicking it around for a while in my head...

As I sit in traffic every morning and every night, I fantasize about different ways to avoid traffic. I've thought about cars with extend-o legs like Inspector Gadget that would simply roll above the other cars. I've explored most of Bellevue's side streets looking for short cuts and secret onramps. I've rolled down the window and shouted in glee at carpool cheaters being pulled over. I've wondered how I could get a quake1 grappling hook. But I know a way end Seattle traffic and make millions! Bwahahahaha!!!!

*drumroll*
Teleportation, the transporation of the future!
*stunned silence*

I'm envisioning that in order to teleport, there would need to be a projection and a reception unit. I don't believe that it would be safe to teleport into random spaces like they do in Star Trek. The risk of lawsuits from people being teleported in front of buses or 100 feet above the ground is too high. Also, there is the possibility that people using the service with criminal intentions such as teleporting into a bank vault or a ladies dressing room. Having safe and controlled sending and receiving station would mitigate these risks entirely.

With that in mind, this new venture would require many locations, enough locations so that the service would not be limited like bus lines or light rail services. There would be enough locations that this service would replace cars as a mode of transportation. A web of teleportation units that would be convienent and accessible to most of the nation and eventually ... THE WORLD! I propose a joint venture with an existing corporation that already has just such a web in place...
*wait for it*
*wait for it*
Imagine... teleportation units at each and every Starbucks.

If it's raining, just teleport across the street!
Want to visit Aunt Margeret in Walla Walla, don't waste time on gas, teleport to the strip mall half a mile away from her house.
Late for a meeting? Don't worry, just teleport to the Starbucks in the lobby of your building.
Baristas would double as travel agents. Grab a latte in New York and finish it in Los Angeles while it's still steaming hot.

Starbucks alredy has the floor space. If they got rid of the coffee mugs and Starbucks music kiosks that no one uses and replaced them with telephone booth sized teleportation units, imagine the possibilities.

Teleportation rates would be based on the travellers molecular volume as well as milage they plan to travel with a base rate for each use.

Show me the money starbucks... show me the money.

pwahahaha

I just smacked a fly so hard with the lid of a rubbermaid container that it stuck to the wall. Part of it at least. I'm not sure where the other half is.

Engrish

This post is inspired by Stephenie.

My parents, brother and sister in law came over for dinner on Saturday. Not only did they bring food, after a walk down to the water they came back and started weeding our garden, which incidently looks the best I've seen since Siska bought it. In the last year we've cut down the evergreen trees, weeded, made a wider path and created an brick patio. We also laid out sod. Hopefully that won't die.

During dinner my parents were trying to catch up on what my friends were up to. I was telling them how some people are looking to buy property and other people are dating seriously still. We talked about others are going back to school and are moving away for a few years. Part of the conversation went like this.

Me: And then Steph Sun is going to LA for grad school.
Mom: Who is Steph?
Me: You've met her before, down in Portland.
Quan: Do I know her?
Brother: Yeah, she lives in the girls' house with Kristie.
Quan: What? How old is she?
Me: I dunno. 23ish.
Mom: Wait? How old is son? I didn't know she had a son.
Quan: Yeah? How does that work?

*pause*
*pregnant pause*
*get it?*

Me: Oh!!! Not Steph's Son.... Steph Sun. Aiya

Your parents don't have to be fobby to have hours of entertainment.

waiting

I hate waiting. I hate not knowing. I have my plans for the next three months, nay! the next three years riding on one little letter that should be delivered in the month of June. (I used 'nay' in a sentence. +10 to me!)

Youth retreats, camping trips, a European vacation, a volleyball league. I can't fully commit to any of them because I may or may not be around Seattle.

It's interesting, when I first kicked around the idea of law school, I was pretty much set that I would apply to UW and if I didn't get in I'd just stay in the career I was in and perhaps switch companies. Just FYI, the admission statistics for UW are here. Having an undergrad GPA of around 3.4, I thought that UW would be my only real option. I know that there are other law programs in the area, but seeing that I already had a career (eep.. a career), I didn't want to go to a lower ranked school than UW.

Then I took my LSATS. The interesting thing about this little sub-chapter in my life was that my decision to go to law school was so last minute that there was only one date left to take the test and that was only three weeks away. It was so late in the game that there weren't any open test spots in Western Washington. Siska and I had to drive to Portland to take the test. blah blah blah, took the test, did better than I expected.

Suddenly, UW was more of my backup school instead of what I was aiming for. Then the decision was if it was worth it to move away and pay a higher tuition for a more prestigious school. We reasoned that it would take a top 10 school in a place we wanted to live to make us move. I applied to Stanford, Berkeley, Columbia and UW. In hindsight I should've applied to NYU as well. My acceptance to UW came almost immediately but then I had to wait a few months to get rejected by the California schools. Having never received a rejection letter before I think I took it quite well :)

But then the letter from Columbia arrived and I was informed I was waitlisted and would have to wait until June for a final decision. Argh!! the agony. It would be have been better to be flat out rejected than to told you were almost good enough.

meh... i hate waiting.

Mind games

Volleyball is such a mind game sometimes. The scores for today's games were
21-25
13-25
25-22
25-12

Our team is at .500, we're aiming for mediocrity.

wendys

This past week has not been a culinary delight. Columbus Ohio has a lot of chain restaurants and all of them have people names. Bob Evans, Tim Hortons, Wendys, Max and Ermas. Wendys is everywhere! Columbus is like the motherland of Wendys, we ate at the original restaurant, but every four blocks is another Wendys. It's like starbucks there. Tim Hortons is a breakfast place that has donuts and coffee 24 hrs a day. Bob and Ermas is like TGIFridays without the stupid buttons on the waiters. Bob Evans is like... I'm not sure. Imagine if someone decided that we all needed cafeteria food. And built a chain of cafeterias disguised as restaurants all over ohio. That's my impression of Bob Evans.
